Winner of three Golden Globes: Best Screenplay for Martin McDonagh, Best Actor for Colin Farell and Best Picture, «The Banshees of Inisherin» is a film to watch this January.
It’s probably the mix between breathtaking landscapes taken from above, beautifully compartmented fields with stone-walls, high cliffs above the sea, a mysterious lake and the performances of the actors, which make the film worth being seen.
Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) wants a friendship-breakup with Pádraic Súilleabháinof (Colin Farell). He feels their chats are aimless and calls Pádraic dull. Siobhán Súilleabháin (Kerry Condon), Pádraic’s sister, thinks everyone in Inisherin is dull. Life there seems utterly boring and just waiting for death. Even though there’s some heavy drinking going on in the local pub and a violent policeman going around, beating up his son Dominic Kearney (Barry Keoghan) and Pádraic for being friends basically.
But I wouldn’t want to spoil too much! Just in case you didn’t understand the title: A “banshee” is a female spirit in Irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member…
Here’s a short Vlog about the film, which is currently on all around Switzerland.
